Ovako har höga klimat- och hållbarhetsambitioner. Från och med januari 2022 kommer stål-produktionen vara koldioxidneutral. Som ett nästa steg förbinder sig nu Ovako att få sina långsiktiga klimatmål godkända av Science Based Targets initative (SBTi).

Ovako continues to lead the way in sustainable steel production, including an innovative approach to heating steel with fossil-free hydrogen. To accelerate its environmental work, t he company now takes the next step by adopting carbon-neutral steel production from January 1, 2022.

- Enables climate-neutral steel production and hydrogen-powered heavy vehicles Sweden’s largest fossil-free hydrogen facility is now being built with the goal of greatly reducing CO2 emissions, developing local industrial hydrogen production, and taking the first step towards a future hydrogen infrastructure for the transport sector. Ovako is starting a collaboration with the Volvo Group, Hitachi ABB Power Grids Sweden, H2 Green Steel and Nel Hydrogen to invest in hydrogen production in Hofors.

The new report highlights Ovako’s leadership in sustainable steel production with a 54 percent reduction in CO 2 emissions since 2015 and a carbon footprint for its steel products that is 80 percent lower than the global average. It also sets new targets to build on these achievements through to 2040.

Ovako has published a set of new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to provide customers with independently audited environmental footprints for its specialty steels. The EPDs cover the full environmental impact, including the carbon footprint of hot-rolled steel bar from Ovako’s Hofors, Imatra, and Smedjebacken and Boxholm (Smebox) mills.

Klaus Enwald has been appointed as the new President of Business Unit Imatra. He starts his new role January 1, 2021 and succeeds Janne Pirttijoki, who has decided to take on new opportunities outside Ovako.

Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the Energy Authority and the state’s sustainable development company Motiva came together to organize the Energy Genius of the Year 2020 competition, seeking out the brightest acts of energy efficiency. Ovako Imatra Oy Ab entered the competition with its vacuum degassing system renewal project and has been recognized as an Energy Genius of the Year 2020.

Göran Jansson has been appointed as the new Business Unit President of Ovako in Smedjebacken / Boxholm and Anders Henström as the Business Unit President of Ovako in Hällefors. Both changes will take effect on September 28, 2020.
